Why are my YouTube views dropping? Six causes and how to check each

Falling YouTube views come from fewer impressions, a lower click rate or shorter watch time. How to find which one in Analytics and what to change.

Quick answer

YouTube views fall for one of three reasons: YouTube is showing your videos to fewer people, fewer of those people click, or those who click leave sooner. Open YouTube Analytics and compare impressions, click-through rate and average view duration with the previous period. The one that fell tells you what to fix.

Start with three numbers

In YouTube Studio, then Analytics, set the period to the last 28 days and turn on comparison with the previous period. Then read, in this order:

NumberWhereIf it fell
ImpressionsReach tabYouTube is offering your videos less often
Impressions click-through rateReach tabTitles and thumbnails are being passed over
Average view durationEngagement tabViewers are leaving earlier

Views are roughly impressions multiplied by click-through rate. Watch time then decides whether YouTube keeps offering the video.

Six common causes

  1. An older hit is fading. One video that carried the channel loses momentum and total views fall, even though new videos perform as before. Check views per video, not the channel total.
  2. You uploaded less. Fewer new videos means fewer chances in Browse and Suggested.
  3. The topic changed. Viewers who subscribed for one subject skip another, and YouTube learns from the skips.
  4. Titles and thumbnails stopped earning clicks. A falling click-through rate with steady impressions points here. Use the thumbnail and title checklist.
  5. Viewers leave early. A slow opening shows as a steep drop in the first thirty seconds of the retention graph. See watch time explained.
  6. Season or news. Search interest in some subjects rises and falls through the year. Compare with the same weeks last year.

Look at traffic sources

Under Reach, open Traffic source types. A fall in Browse features and Suggested videos means recommendations slowed. A fall in YouTube search means fewer people searched for the topic, or other videos now rank above yours. A fall in External means a site or app that sent viewers has stopped.

When the number itself is corrected

YouTube audits views and removes those it considers invalid, including artificial traffic. A count can therefore go down, not just grow more slowly. This also applies to purchased views; see is it safe to buy YouTube views.

What to change first

  • Rewrite the title and thumbnail of a recent video whose click-through rate is below your average. YouTube lets you change both after publishing.
  • Cut the opening of your next video so the subject appears in the first ten seconds.
  • Return to the topic that earned your best watch time, and make the next video its follow-up.
  • Add end screens and playlists so a viewer who finishes one video is offered another.

Give a change two or three uploads before judging it. One video is not a trend.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my YouTube views suddenly drop?

The usual reasons are an older popular video losing momentum, fewer uploads, or a change of topic. Compare impressions, click-through rate and average view duration with the previous period to see which changed.

Can YouTube remove views?

Yes. YouTube audits view counts and removes views it considers invalid, such as artificial or automated traffic.

Do subscribers guarantee views?

No. Subscribers see your videos only when they choose to watch. Most views on most channels come from Browse, Suggested and Search rather than from the subscriptions feed.
