YouTube thumbnail and title checklist

A fifteen-point checklist for YouTube thumbnails and titles: size and format, text, faces and contrast, title length, and how to test a change.

Quick answer

A thumbnail and title have one job: earn the click and set an expectation the video then meets. Use a 1280 by 720 pixel image under 2 MB, one clear subject, at most four words of text, and a title of about 60 characters that completes the thumbnail instead of repeating it.

Technical basics

  • Size: 1280 by 720 pixels, 16:9. Minimum width 640 pixels.
  • File: JPG, PNG or GIF, under 2 MB for most accounts.
  • Title limit: 100 characters. Search results and suggested videos usually show about 60, so put the key words first.
  • Custom thumbnails require a verified account (phone verification in YouTube Studio).

Thumbnail checklist

  1. One subject. If you cannot describe the image in five words, simplify it.
  2. Readable at phone size. Shrink it to 10% on your screen. Can you still tell what it is?
  3. Four words of text at most, in a heavy typeface, never covering the bottom-right corner where the duration appears.
  4. High contrast between subject and background. Check it against both light and dark mode.
  5. Faces show an emotion, if you use faces. Neutral faces add nothing.
  6. Show the result or the tension, not the process.
  7. Stay consistent in colour and layout so returning viewers recognise you.
  8. No misleading images. YouTube's policies prohibit thumbnails that misrepresent the video, and misleading thumbnails cause early exits, which hurts the video more than a lower click rate would.

Title checklist

  1. Lead with the topic. The first three words should carry the meaning.
  2. Promise something specific. "I rebuilt this bike for $40" is clearer than "My bike project".
  3. Do not repeat the thumbnail. If the thumbnail says "$40", the title can say what was built.
  4. Use words people search for when the topic is searchable. Type the topic into YouTube search and read the suggestions.
  5. Avoid all capitals and strings of symbols. They read as spam.

Test and measure

  1. Use YouTube's test feature if you have it. "Test and compare" in YouTube Studio lets you upload up to three thumbnails and reports which earned the most watch time share.
  2. Otherwise, change one thing and compare. Note the click-through rate over a few days, change the thumbnail, and compare the same number of days. Changing title and thumbnail together tells you nothing about either.

Read the result alongside average view duration. A thumbnail that raises clicks but lowers duration is promising something the video does not deliver. See watch time and click-through rate explained.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change a thumbnail after publishing?

Yes, at any time in YouTube Studio. Changing a thumbnail or title on an older video can revive it if the topic is still relevant.

Do Shorts need thumbnails?

Shorts are mostly viewed in the feed, where no thumbnail shows. You can choose a frame for the Short, which appears on your channel page and in search.
