Watch time is the total minutes viewers spent on a video. It is the product of three things: how often YouTube showed the video (impressions), how often people clicked (click-through rate), and how long they stayed (average view duration). Improving the thumbnail and title raises clicks; improving the first 30 seconds raises duration.
The funnel
Open YouTube Studio, then Analytics, then Reach to see it drawn as a funnel:
| Step | Metric | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows your thumbnail | Impressions | How past viewers responded; topic demand |
| A viewer clicks | Impressions click-through rate | Thumbnail and title |
| The viewer watches | Average view duration | The opening, pacing and whether the video delivers the title's promise |
| Total | Watch time | All of the above multiplied together |
An example: 20000 impressions at a 5% click-through rate gives 1000 views. At an average view duration of 4 minutes, that is 4000 minutes, or about 67 hours of watch time.
Click-through rate
It is the share of impressions that became views. YouTube says half of all channels and videos have a rate between 2% and 10%. New videos often start high, because they are shown to subscribers first, and settle lower as they reach a wider audience.
Read it together with impressions. A falling rate with rising impressions usually means the video is being shown to more new people, which is good.
To improve it: make the thumbnail readable at phone size, use three or four words of large text at most, and make the title complete the thumbnail instead of repeating it.
Average view duration and retention
Open a video's analytics and choose Engagement to see the audience retention graph.
- A steep drop in the first 30 seconds means the opening did not match the title and thumbnail, or took too long to start.
- A gradual slope is normal.
- Dips mark the parts people skipped.
- Bumps mark the parts people rewatched. Make more of those.
Compare the percentage viewed between your own videos of similar length. A ten-minute video with 45% average viewed is doing well for most channels.
What YouTube says it optimises for
YouTube describes its recommendation system as trying to predict which videos a viewer will watch and be satisfied with. It uses watch behaviour and also direct feedback such as surveys, likes, dislikes and "not interested". Watch time matters, but a long video that viewers abandon is not rewarded for its length.
What view counts alone do not tell you
A view is counted when someone watches for a meaningful period, and YouTube filters views it considers invalid. The count says how many times a video was started, not how it held attention. Displayed counts, including those from a views package, do not change retention or click-through rate.
A weekly review habit
- In Analytics, sort the last 28 days by watch time.
- For the top three videos, note the click-through rate and average view duration.
- For the bottom three, check which of the two numbers was weak.
- Change one thing in the next video: the opening, or the thumbnail style.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good click-through rate on YouTube?
YouTube says half of channels and videos fall between 2% and 10%. Compare a video with your own earlier videos, and read the rate alongside impressions.
Does watch time or view count matter more?
Watch time and viewer satisfaction matter more for recommendations. View count is the result of impressions and click-through rate.
