TikTok vs Instagram Reels: which should a small business use?

TikTok is stronger at reaching strangers; Instagram is stronger at turning attention into messages and sales. How to choose, and how to post to both.

Quick answer

Use TikTok when you need new people to discover you, and Instagram Reels when you already have followers, a catalogue and customers who message you. Most small businesses should film once and post to both, removing the other app's watermark, then keep the platform where enquiries actually arrive.

The short comparison

TikTokInstagram Reels
DiscoveryStrong. The For You feed leans heavily on non-followersGood. Reels are recommended, but the app also centres on people you follow
SearchWidely used to look things up; captions and on-screen text matterWorks by keywords and hashtags; less of a habit for viewers
RelationshipComments and follows; messaging is secondaryDirect messages, Stories, Highlights and a browsable grid
SellingBio link and shop features, which vary by countryBio link, link stickers in Stories, product tags where available
Style that worksDirect, spoken, fast, native to trends and soundsSlightly more polished; fits a consistent grid

Both rank videos mainly by how long people watch, so a video that holds attention tends to do well on both.

Choose TikTok first if

  • few people know your business yet,
  • your product is easy to show in a few seconds,
  • you are comfortable talking to camera,
  • your customers are in a market where TikTok is widely used.

Choose Instagram first if

  • customers already message you there,
  • your work is visual and benefits from a grid people can browse,
  • you rely on Stories for daily stock, bookings or opening hours,
  • your buyers check a profile before they trust a shop.

Check where your customers are

Availability differs by market. TikTok withdrew its app from Hong Kong in July 2020, so a shop that sells only to Hong Kong customers will find them on Instagram, while a Hong Kong brand selling to Taiwan, Southeast Asia or further afield can still use TikTok to reach those buyers. Check which apps your own customers open before you plan a schedule.

Posting the same video to both

  1. Film vertically and edit outside either app, or save the clean file before publishing.
  2. Upload the clean file to each platform. Do not repost a download that carries the other app's watermark; both platforms recommend those less.
  3. Add text and sound inside each app so they match its conventions.
  4. Rewrite the caption. TikTok captions should carry the search words; Instagram captions can be longer and end with a prompt to message.

Decide with your own numbers

After a month, compare three things per platform: views from people who do not follow you, profile visits, and enquiries. Enquiries are the one that pays. Keep posting to both if it costs little, and put the extra effort where the messages come from. For the mechanics of each feed, see how the For You page works and how the Instagram algorithm works.

Frequently asked questions

Can I post the same video on TikTok and Instagram Reels?

Yes, if you upload the original file to each. Avoid reposting a download with the other platform's watermark, because both recommend watermarked videos less.

Which gets more views, TikTok or Reels?

It depends on the account and the market. TikTok usually sends a new account's videos to more strangers. Reels often convert better for an account that already has followers.

Is TikTok available in Hong Kong?

TikTok withdrew its app from Hong Kong in July 2020. Businesses there generally reach local customers through Instagram and other platforms.
