How the TikTok For You page works

TikTok recommends videos from how viewers react, what the video contains and a few device settings. Follower count is not a direct factor.

Quick answer

The For You feed ranks each video for each viewer using three groups of signals: how people interact with it (watching to the end, rewatching, liking, sharing, commenting, following), information about the video (caption, sounds, hashtags) and device and account settings (language, country, device type). TikTok says follower count and past hits are not direct ranking factors.

The three groups of signals

TikTok has described its recommendation system publicly. It weighs:

  1. User interactions. Videos a viewer finishes, rewatches, likes, shares, comments on or saves; accounts they follow; videos they mark as "not interested".
  2. Video information. The caption, the sound, hashtags and what the system detects in the video itself.
  3. Device and account settings. Language preference, country setting and device type. TikTok says these carry less weight, because viewers do not actively choose them.

Strong signals, such as watching a longer video to the end, count for more than weak ones, such as the viewer and creator being in the same country.

How a new video is tested

A new video is first shown to a small group of viewers the system thinks may like it. If they watch and interact, it is shown to a larger group, and so on. If they swipe away quickly, distribution slows. This is why two videos from the same account can end with 300 views and 300000 views.

It is also why TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor. A large following gives a video more first viewers from the Following tab, but the For You test happens either way.

What this means in practice

  • The first two seconds decide the swipe. Open with the result, the question or the movement, not an introduction.
  • Completion beats length. A 12-second video watched fully does better than a 60-second video abandoned at 10.
  • Rewatches count. Loops, quick text that needs a second look, and reveals at the end all earn them.
  • Write the caption for search. TikTok reads captions and on-screen text. Say plainly what the video is about.
  • Use sounds deliberately. A sound groups your video with others using it; a trending sound only helps if it suits the video.
  • One topic per account helps. Viewers who liked one video are shown your next one; if it is about something else, they swipe.

What does not work

  • Hashtags such as #fyp or #foryou. They describe nothing about the video.
  • Deleting and re-uploading a video that started slowly. The second upload is tested the same way.
  • Posting many near-identical videos in a day. They compete with each other for the same viewers.

Check your own data

Open TikTok Studio, then Analytics, and choose a video. Traffic source shows what share of views came from For You, and the retention graph shows the second where viewers left. Fix that second in your next video.

Counts such as TikTok views and likes change what visitors see on a video. They are not the same as the watch behaviour the For You system measures.

Frequently asked questions

Does TikTok show my videos to followers first?

Followers see your videos in the Following tab and may see them on For You, but every video is also tested with non-followers. Follower count is not a direct ranking factor.

How long does TikTok push a video?

Most distribution happens in the first one to three days, but TikTok can resurface older videos weeks later if they start performing with a new group of viewers.
