Instagram Reels upload looks blurry
Compare the same detail in the original recording, the final exported file and the version you are viewing after upload. Start at the first stage that looks soft; uploading cannot recreate detail absent from the source.
Your working document
Find the first stage that loses detail
Inspect the recording
View the original file at a comparable size. Check focus, motion and the detail you want viewers to see. If it is already soft, start with the recording rather than an upload setting.
Inspect the final export
Compare the exported file with the original. Check the editor's actual output settings and whether a small crop was enlarged substantially. Export from the original source rather than a repeatedly saved copy.
Inspect the transfer
Check that the file reaching the publishing device is the intended export. A messaging or sharing workflow may provide a different version; compare the file details rather than assuming the names identify the same file.
Check the upload method
Use the requirements and controls shown by the actual app or publishing tool. Do not treat settings for a different upload method as universal platform rules.
Compare viewing conditions
Compare the same visible detail on an appropriate device and connection. A single preview is not enough to isolate whether the file, processing or viewing conditions explain the difference.
Choose a useful test
| Observation | Next test | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Original is soft | Improve focus/framing or use a suitable original recording | Promising an export preset can restore missing detail |
| Export is softer | Compare source, crop and actual export settings | Repeatedly recompressing an already degraded copy |
| Transfer version differs | Transfer the intended original export and compare file details | Assuming a message attachment preserves the same version |
| Only one viewing condition looks soft | Compare conditions and record the difference | Declaring the account penalised from the picture alone |
Keep platform limits separate from this diagnosis
This worksheet does not publish an unverified file-size limit, resolution requirement or current settings-menu path. Check the destination's current documentation when those facts affect your export.
A crop calculator can explain the geometry, but it does not inspect sharpness or guarantee upload quality. Record one change at a time so a later comparison has a clear meaning.
