Video subtitle line length checker
Paste the words that will actually appear, keeping your intended line breaks. Choose your own line budget and review each line's count and excess. The default 32 is a working example, not a universal subtitle or platform limit.
What the checker counts
| Text feature | Treatment | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Spaces and punctuation within a line | Included in its count | They occupy part of the displayed line |
| Explicit line breaks | Create separate line records | A total character count cannot identify an overloaded line |
| Combined letters and emoji sequences | Counted as visible grapheme clusters | A visible symbol can contain several underlying code points |
| Blank lines | Shown as zero-count lines | They remain part of your chosen layout |
Prepare the input
This tool reviews plain display text. Remove cue numbers and timestamps from a full subtitle file before pasting; it does not parse SubRip timing or validate synchronisation.
A line's pixel width also depends on font, size and rendering. Equal character counts can have very different widths. Use the count to locate a line worth reviewing, then inspect the actual subtitle in the chosen video frame.
Keep an idea or phrase together when it helps comprehension. Splitting a line solely to reduce the count can produce an awkward reading sequence; shorten or rephrase the wording when appropriate.
Review in playback
- Check the actual font and frame.
- Allow enough time to read the line at normal speed.
- Keep wording consistent with the spoken meaning.
- Confirm that overlays or crops do not hide essential text.
