YouTube video resolution and aspect ratio reference
Resolution describes pixel dimensions; aspect ratio describes the shape of the frame. Choose a canvas that suits the actual footage and viewing task. YouTube's desktop reference is 16:9, while the player also adapts to square and vertical videos.
YouTube's 16:9 reference dimensions
| Label | Width × height | Use in planning |
|---|---|---|
| 4320p / 8K | 7680 × 4320 | Check source detail and the actual playback destination |
| 2160p / 4K | 3840 × 2160 | Compare with the detail actually present in the source |
| 1440p | 2560 × 1440 | Keep the intended subject readable after export |
| 1080p | 1920 × 1080 | Check your source and output, not the label alone |
| 720p | 1280 × 720 | Test small text and product details at normal playback |
| 480p | 854 × 480 | This listed dimension is a rounded reference |
| 360p | 640 × 360 | Expect fewer pixels for a detailed scene |
| 240p | 426 × 240 | A low-resolution reference, not a universal export target |
Three different framing changes
| Change | What happens | Question to review |
|---|---|---|
| Crop | Part of the source frame is removed | Does the useful action remain visible? |
| Fit within another canvas | The source is preserved with space around it | Is the extra space appropriate, or should the player adapt? |
| Stretch | The source shape is distorted | Have proportions changed in a way that misrepresents the subject? |
Let the player handle its own padding
YouTube advises against adding black bars or padding directly into the video because it can interfere with the player's adaptation. A viewer's device may still show padding; that is different from permanently placing it inside the exported image.
A 3840-pixel-wide export does not prove the footage contains native 4K detail. Record the source dimensions and inspect the actual exported scene. Use the crop calculator to understand geometry, then review the video itself because geometry alone cannot judge focus, readability or a useful explanation.
Before committing to the canvas
- The source dimensions and intended output are recorded.
- Important hands, labels and actions survive the chosen crop.
- The export is not distorted merely to match a ratio.
- Any embedded padding serves a deliberate editing purpose rather than an assumed platform requirement.
- The actual output remains understandable on the intended viewing device.
