How to reuse a long YouTube tutorial as a Shorts series
Choose separate questions from the tutorial, then make each short understandable without the preceding chapter. Keep the conclusion and necessary conditions in the clip, and use the full tutorial for viewers who need the next layer of detail.
Your working document
Example episode map: a product-photography tutorial
| Short's question | Complete explanation | Context to restore | Deeper topic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Why is the label hard to read? | Show the glare problem and one actual light-position correction | Identify the product and lighting setup | Full lighting walkthrough |
| How much space should I leave for a crop? | Show the full frame and intended crop with the important detail retained | State the chosen output ratio | Framing and crop planning |
| Which image explains the contents? | Show a complete included set and separate demonstration props | Name what is actually sold together | Product-information shot list |
Edit for a new viewer
Extract a question
Choose a passage that answers one actual viewer need. Avoid a clip that begins with 'as I said earlier' and leaves the missing explanation elsewhere.
Restore identity and conditions
Add the product, task or setup information needed to interpret the action. Keep qualifications that change the meaning of the answer.
Review the new frame
Inspect labels, hands, diagrams and subtitles after reframing. Record a new close view when the original crop cannot explain the detail.
Choose the deeper destination
Connect the Short to the video that explains the next useful question, rather than automatically choosing the newest upload.
Choose the available YouTube method
YouTube's Edit into a Short feature applies to eligible public long-form videos you uploaded. Its help page describes a selection of up to 60 seconds and excludes private, unlisted and third-party-claimed source videos for that feature. Those are this creation method's conditions, not a statement that every Short has the same runtime limit.
YouTube also supports a related-video selection for a Short when the channel has advanced feature access. The selected video must be from your channel and be public or unlisted. Check the linked help pages for the current setup before publishing.
The episode map above is an original planning example. It does not claim that creating three Shorts produces a particular traffic result. Review whether viewers understand each answer and can find the relevant deeper explanation.
