Telegram channel vs group: differences and when to use each

A Telegram channel broadcasts from admins to subscribers. A group is a shared conversation. How they differ in size, privacy, moderation and statistics.

Quick answer

A Telegram channel is one-way: admins post, subscribers read, and each post shows a view count. A group is a conversation where members can post, with up to 200000 members. Use a channel to publish, a group to discuss, and link the two if you want comments under channel posts.

Channels

Posts appear under the channel's name, not the admin's, unless signatures are turned on. Every post shows how many times it was viewed. Channels with enough subscribers get a statistics page showing growth, sources and reach.

Subscribers cannot reply in a channel directly. To let them, link a discussion group: each post then gets a comment button that opens a thread in the group.

Groups

Every member can post unless admins restrict it. Admins can set slow mode, approve new members, restrict media and appoint moderators with specific rights. Large groups can enable topics, which split the group into separate threads.

Public and private

Both can be public, with a username and a t.me link that appears in search, or private, joined only through an invite link. Private invite links can be limited by time or number of uses, and can require admin approval.

This matters for services too. Orders for Telegram members or post views need the link type stated in the package conditions; some packages accept private invite links and others need a public username.

Which to choose

  • You publish, they read: a channel.
  • Customers help each other: a group.
  • You publish and want comments: a channel with a linked discussion group.
  • A course or paid community: a private group, or a private channel plus a private group.

Moving from one to the other

You cannot convert a group into a channel. If a group has become a broadcast, create a channel, announce it in the group, and keep the group for discussion.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Telegram channel have multiple admins?

Yes. The owner can add admins and choose what each may do, such as posting, editing others' posts or adding subscribers.

Do Telegram channels show who viewed a post?

No. A post shows the number of views, not the names of viewers.
