How to grow a Telegram channel: setup, content and promotion

Telegram has no recommendation feed, so channels grow through links, search and forwards. A setup checklist, posting habits and seven ways to bring in subscribers.

Quick answer

Telegram channels grow by being linked, searched and forwarded, because Telegram has no feed that recommends channels to strangers. Make the channel public with a short username, write a description containing the words people search for, post on a schedule, and promote the link everywhere your audience already is.

Set the channel up to be found

  • Make it public and choose a short username. That gives you a link in the form t.me/yourname and lets the channel appear in Telegram search.
  • Put search words in the name and description. Telegram search matches channel names and usernames; a description helps visitors decide.
  • Add a clear profile photo that is readable at small size.
  • Pin a welcome post explaining what you post, how often, and linking to your best three posts.
  • Enable signatures or a discussion group if you want readers to reply. A linked group adds a comment button under each post.

Channel or group

A channel broadcasts: only admins post, and subscribers see a view count on each post. A group is a conversation, with up to 200000 members. Most publishers use a channel for posts and link a group to it for comments.

Posting habits that keep subscribers

  1. A fixed rhythm. One to three posts a day is plenty. Muted channels are rarely read.
  2. One idea per post. Short posts are forwarded more.
  3. Lead with the point. The notification preview shows the first line.
  4. Use native formats. Polls, quizzes and voice notes get responses that plain links do not.
  5. Schedule posts by holding the send button. Post when your readers are awake, not when you are.
  6. Watch the view count. Views per post divided by subscribers tells you how many people actually read. A falling ratio means the channel is being muted.

Seven ways to bring in subscribers

  1. Your other platforms. Put the t.me link in your Instagram bio, YouTube descriptions, X profile and email signature.
  2. Exclusive content. Give people a reason to join: early access, files, discounts, or a daily summary that exists nowhere else.
  3. Cross-promotion. Agree a mutual mention with a channel of similar size in a related topic.
  4. Forward-worthy posts. Every forward carries your channel name. Checklists, templates and data get forwarded.
  5. Telegram Ads. The official ad platform shows sponsored messages in public channels with 1000 or more subscribers.
  6. Directories and communities. List the channel in relevant catalogues and mention it where it is on topic and allowed.
  7. Your website. Add a join button, and link the channel on order confirmation and thank-you pages.

Subscriber count and view count

Visitors judge a channel by its subscriber count and by views on recent posts. The two should make sense together: 20000 subscribers with 150 views per post looks abandoned.

That is the limit of Telegram member packages: they raise the subscriber number, and views are a separate measure that depends on real readers or on a separate post views package. Read each package's conditions; some require a public link and some do not include a refill.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Adding people without consent. It leads to reports, and Telegram can restrict accounts that are reported as spam.
  • Posting only links. Give the reader the main point in the post itself.
  • Changing the username. Old links stop working.
