How to get more followers on X: profile, posts and replies

A profile checklist for X, the kinds of posts that travel, and why replies are the fastest way for a small account to be seen.

Quick answer

On X, small accounts are discovered mostly through replies and reposts, not through their own timeline. Make the profile say clearly what you post about, reply thoughtfully to larger accounts in your field every day, publish one useful original post a day, and pin the post that best represents you.

How posts reach people

X has two main timelines. Following shows posts from accounts you follow, newest first. For You mixes those with recommended posts from accounts you do not follow, chosen from signals such as likes, replies, reposts, bookmarks and time spent reading. X has published parts of its recommendation code, and the consistent theme is that replies and reposts from people in a reader's network carry a post further than likes.

For a small account, that means your own posts start with few viewers, but a good reply under a popular post is seen by that post's audience.

Profile checklist

  • Name and handle people can remember and spell.
  • Bio (160 characters) that says what you post about and for whom. Lead with the topic.
  • Profile photo that is recognisable in a 40-pixel circle.
  • Header image that supports the bio: your product, your work, or a single line of text.
  • Pinned post that is your best work or a short introduction with a link.
  • Link and location, where relevant.

A visitor decides in a few seconds. They look at the bio, the pinned post and your last three posts.

What to post

  1. One clear idea per post. If it needs a second idea, make it a thread.
  2. Specifics. Numbers, names, screenshots and examples are quoted and bookmarked.
  3. Your own observation. "Here is what I noticed doing X for a year" travels further than a general tip.
  4. Media when it adds something. A chart or a short clip earns more time than text alone.
  5. Threads for depth. Put the conclusion in the first post so it stands alone.

Posts are limited to 280 characters on standard accounts; Premium subscribers can write longer posts.

Replies are the growth channel

  • Reply early under posts from larger accounts in your field. Turn on notifications for five to ten of them.
  • Add something: a counter-example, a number, a clarifying question. "Great post" adds nothing.
  • Keep replies short enough to read without expanding.
  • Reply to everyone who replies to you. Conversations are shown to both sides' followers.

Twenty good replies a day will bring more profile visits than three original posts.

Measure it

Tap the chart icon under a post to see impressions, engagements and profile visits. The number to watch is profile visits to follows. If many people visit and few follow, the profile is the problem, not the posts.

About follower counts

A follower count affects whether a visitor takes a new account seriously, which is why X follower packages exist. They change the displayed count. They do not add people who read or reply, and X removes accounts it identifies as spam, so counts can fall. Check a package's refill terms before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Do hashtags help on X?

Less than they used to. One relevant hashtag for an event or community can help people find the post; several make it look like an advert.

Does X Premium increase reach?

X states that replies from Premium subscribers are given priority ranking in conversations. It does not replace posting things people want to read.
