What is an Instagram shadowban, and how do you check for one?

Instagram does not use the word shadowban, but it can stop recommending an account's content. How to check Account Status, the usual causes and how to recover.

Quick answer

A shadowban is the informal name for Instagram limiting how far your content travels without telling you directly. Instagram does not use the term, but it does stop recommending content that breaks its Recommendation Guidelines. You can check this yourself: open Settings, then Account Status, which shows whether your content can be recommended to non-followers.

What people mean by a shadowban

Reach drops suddenly, posts stop appearing under hashtags or on Explore, and nothing in the app says why. That experience is what people call a shadowban.

Instagram's own description is narrower. It separates two things:

  • Community Guidelines decide what is removed.
  • Recommendation Guidelines decide what is shown to people who do not follow you. Content can stay up and still not be eligible for Explore, Reels recommendations or hashtag pages.

So an account is rarely hidden from its own followers. What changes is whether Instagram recommends it to anyone else.

How to check

  1. Open your profile and go to Settings.
  2. Open Account Status.
  3. Look at three sections: removed content, what can be recommended, and features you cannot use.

If Account Status says your content cannot be recommended, it lists the posts responsible and offers a way to request a review. If everything is clear, the drop in reach has another cause.

Common causes

  • Posts that go against the Recommendation Guidelines, even when they are allowed on the platform.
  • Reposted videos that carry another app's watermark. Instagram has said it recommends these less.
  • Behaviour that looks automated: following or unfollowing in bulk, repeating the same comment, or using third-party apps that act for you.
  • Hashtags that have been restricted because of misuse.
  • Engagement that Instagram judges to be artificial. Its terms prohibit it, and it removes what it detects.
  • Several removed posts in a short period.

How to recover

  1. Use Request review in Account Status for anything you think was flagged in error.
  2. Edit or delete the posts that are listed.
  3. Remove access for third-party apps you do not need, under Settings, then Website permissions.
  4. Stop bulk actions for a couple of weeks.
  5. Post original content, without watermarks from other apps.

Recommendation eligibility is reassessed over time. There is no setting that resets it at once.

When it is not a shadowban

Most drops in reach are ordinary. A Reel that travelled last week makes this week look worse. A change of topic, a gap in posting or a seasonal lull does the same. Open Insights and compare accounts reached from non-followers across several posts of the same format. If only one post fell, the post is the cause. If Account Status is clear and the fall is gradual, look at the content rather than for a penalty. See how the Instagram algorithm works and why accounts lose followers.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an Instagram shadowban last?

Instagram gives no fixed period. Eligibility for recommendations is reassessed as flagged posts are removed or successfully reviewed. Account Status shows the current state.

Does Instagram tell you if you are shadowbanned?

Not with that word. Account Status in Settings shows whether your content can be recommended to non-followers and which posts caused a restriction.

Can hashtags cause a shadowban?

Using a restricted hashtag can keep a post off that hashtag's page. Repeating the same large block of unrelated hashtags can also look like spam. Three to five relevant hashtags is Instagram's own suggestion.
