A good Instagram bio answers three questions in 150 characters: who you are, what people get from following, and what to do next. Put a searchable keyword in the name field, state the benefit in the first line, add one proof point, and end with a single call to action that matches your link.
The parts of a profile and their limits
| Field | Limit | Searchable |
|---|---|---|
| Username | 30 characters | Yes |
| Name | 64 characters | Yes |
| Bio | 150 characters | Partly |
| Links | Up to five | No |
| Category (professional accounts) | One | Yes |
The name field is separate from your username and is searchable. "Maya | Hong Kong food guide" will appear for searches that "Maya" alone never would.
A four-line structure
- What you post, for whom. "Weeknight dinners for people who hate washing up."
- Why you. One proof point: a job, a result or a number you can stand behind.
- What is new or where you are. A city, a launch, opening hours.
- One action. "Menu and bookings below", with the link directly under it.
Line breaks make a bio easier to scan. Write it in your notes app and paste it in if the app removes the breaks.

Details that help
- Keywords over adjectives. "Wedding florist, Kaohsiung" is found; "passionate creative soul" is not.
- One call to action. Two choices halve the response to each.
- Match the link to the last line. If the bio says "book a table", the first link should be the booking page.
- Emoji as bullets, sparingly. They save characters, and screen readers read each one aloud.
- Pin three posts that prove the promise in the bio. They sit directly under it.
What the bio cannot do
The bio convinces a visitor who is already on your profile. It does not bring visitors. Those come from posts being recommended, searched and shared, and from the name and category fields matching what people look for.
Visitors also glance at follower and post counts before reading. A brand-new account with a strong bio and nine good posts looks more complete than one with a single post. If you are considering a followers package for that first impression, set the bio and posts up first.
Frequently asked questions
How many links can I add to my Instagram bio?
Up to five. Only the first is shown in full; visitors tap to see the rest.
Are hashtags in a bio useful?
A hashtag in a bio is clickable but does not make the profile appear on that hashtag's page. Use one only for your own branded tag.
