Instagram shows the account owner who viewed their Stories and who is watching a Live. It does not show who viewed a feed post, a Reel or a profile; for those the owner sees only totals. No third-party app can reveal profile visitors, because Instagram does not provide that information.
What the account owner can see
| Content | Can they see who viewed it? | What they see |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Yes | A list of viewer names for 48 hours after posting |
| Live video | Yes | Viewers who join while it is live |
| Feed post (photo or carousel) | No | Number of accounts reached; names of people who liked or commented |
| Reel | No | Number of plays; names of people who liked or commented |
| Profile | No | Number of profile visits (professional accounts only) |
| Direct message | Partly | "Seen" under a message, unless read receipts are turned off |
| Highlight | Yes, for 48 hours | The same viewer list as the original Story |
Stories
Swipe up on your own Story to open the viewer list. It stays available for 48 hours from the time the Story was posted, even though the Story itself disappears after 24. After that only the total view count remains in Insights or the archive.
The order of the list is not a ranking of who looked at your profile most. For small lists it is close to chronological; for larger ones Instagram sorts it by your interactions with those accounts.
Posts and Reels
There is no viewer list for posts or Reels. You can see who liked and commented, and professional accounts see totals for reach, plays, saves and shares. A Reel's view count is a number, not a set of names.
Profile visits
Instagram has never shown who visited a profile. Professional accounts see how many visits they received over a period, in Insights.
Apps that claim to show profile viewers
They cannot. Instagram's interface for developers does not include this data, so any app that shows a list of "profile stalkers" is inventing it. These apps usually ask for your username and password, which gives them full access to your account. Do not log in to them.
How to view a Story without appearing in the list
Viewing a Story from your own account always adds you to the list. Some people use a second account. Be careful with websites offering anonymous viewing: they only work for public accounts, and you should never enter your own login on them.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram notify someone when you screenshot their Story?
No. Instagram does not notify people about screenshots of Stories, posts or Reels. It does notify when you screenshot a disappearing photo or video sent in a direct message.
Can a business account see who viewed its posts?
No. A professional account sees more totals, such as reach and profile visits, but still no names of viewers for posts or Reels.
